MONTREAL—Dr. Joseph H. Chung, a professor of economics at the Université du Québec à Montréal, was one of 1,200 impressed theater-goers who attended the premiere of the Chinese New Year Spectacular at Montreal's Theater Maisonneuve on Tuesday evening.
"I think the show encompasses as much the music as the scenery, the dance, and the tenderness. All these elements in themselves make it a first-class show," said Chung, who is of Korean background.
"The show is very interesting. It incorporates modern and traditional elements, which touch one's heart. The show was a success."
Chung added that the Spectacular "critiques human rights violations with tenderness."
"The mix of Western and Eastern instruments was really good; it's a great initiative."
Georges Alias and his wife Elvire, a retired couple, said they appreciated the fusion of different cultures' musical instruments.
"We loved everything; the musicians, the drum players, the singers. ..."
The Chinese New Year Spectacular was presented by the New York-based Divine Performing Arts Company, which is currently on a global tour with the show. There are three more shows on Jan.16 and 17 in Montreal. The Spectacular will play in Toronto from Jan.18–20.
