Since 1928, the Boston Opera House (BOH) has hosted numerous shows, but the Chinese New Year Spectacular is like nothing the BOH—or any other theater—has ever seen. The show features authentic classical Chinese performances portraying the myths and legends of ancient China.

Although the production started only four years ago, this Broadway favorite is now the largest Chinese New Year celebration in the world—Divine Performing Arts consists of over 150 artists, touring more than 60 major cities during the Chinese New Year season.

Following the success of last year's show, this year the Spectacular returns to Boston with four new programs. Spectacular organizers say that the production will be sure to come to Boston every Chinese New Year.

This is certainly great news for Bostonians, as theater-goers unanimously agreed that they loved the show. Many even said it was the best show they've ever seen.

Mrs. Johnson came to the show with her ten-year-old boy, Tyler. She said there were many reasons she loved it.

"First, I think what I really like about the show is being exposed to the Chinese culture, which is a very interesting treat for me," explained Johnson. "Second, I think that just from a performance perspective, I like the dance. I just like the movement. I like the way that the stories are intertwined with the dance. I've been to other shows, but I think I like this one the best because of the costumes, all the colors, and everything is really, really nice. So I definitely have to say I enjoyed it. And I'll come back next year."

For Mr. Mandas, watching this festive yet peaceful production may be the perfect way to relax after returning from his service in the U.S. army. He found the show was great and said he loved it. This military man claimed his favorite program of the evening was the dance of Tang Dynasty warriors pounding a powerful rhythm on huge drums.

Denise, an accountant, also appreciates the show, but from a more feminine perspective. "Oh I think it's beautiful!" she exclaimed with admiration. "The costumes are gorgeous, and the dances are beautiful! It's fascinating! I really enjoyed the fan dance a lot—and the drums. But it's all so beautiful. I like it a lot!"

For Marina, who works for the Girl Scouts, it was hard to pick a favorite program, because she loved them all. "The dances are beautiful, the music's great, and the drummers are great … Everything was beautiful!" She said what impressed her most was the grace of the dancers and the peacefulness of the music. "The whole evening was just enjoyable!"

Real Estate agent Jessie found the show "a great presentation." She was particularly impressed by the contralto because she loved the message her song was giving. She said the show was "very dynamic and enjoyable."
