LOS ANGELES─The Chinese New Year Spectacular's second showing at the Nokia L.A. Live Theater in Los Angeles brought to those in attendance new views of Chinese culture through music and dance.

Darya Alhambra, a Los Angeles County advocate from Alhambra, Ca. said she "thought it was wonderful," and that she thought she "enjoyed the music the most, it was really beautiful."

The music that accompanies the dance portions of the Spectacular is unique in that it combines Chinese and Western instruments in an orchestra, playing Western, classical arrangements of Chinese melodies. Also in the show, however, are vocal and instrumental solo performances.

Alhambra said her favorite performance was the erhu piece, saying "I think that was the prettiest one." The erhu is a Chinese two-stringed instrument, sometimes referred to as a "Chinese violin." It is noted for its vocal-like qualities.

Alhambra added, "I'm really glad I got to go because I saw an aspect of Chinese culture that I've never seen before."

Mataka Mposa, a banker also from Alhambra, Ca. said, "The show is fantastic. It's one of the shows where you come in to see a different culture, how culture has evolved from the beginning to where we are now."

The Spectacular draws on China's 5000-year past to portray a variety of stories from a range of times, including things happening today in China.

Mposa continued, "Generally, every single one of [the performances] had a story of its own kind, so I liked each and every aspect of it, and I'm looking forward to coming to more shows of a similar nature."
