SAN FRANCISCO—On Jan. 23, the Orpheum Theatre—known as a San Francisco Historical Landmark built in the dramatic style of a 12th century Spanish palace—opened its magnificent carved doors for the first of seven performances of Divine Performing Arts' Chinese New Year Spectacular to be held this week.
Since 2004, the New York-based Divine Performing Arts, the company that presents the Spectacular shows, has been promoting a renaissance of 5,000-year-old Chinese traditional arts and culture by staging the Spectacular in some of the world's most prestigious venues.
Thrilled theatergoers filled the lobby during the intermission of the Wednesday matinee performance.
A beautiful lady, Natasha Popovich, a formerly flight attendant for American Airlines, excitedly exclaimed, "I loved the drummers, Mongolian Bowl Dance and Water Sleeves the most."

She said, that living in such a multicultural city like San Francisco, she has many Chinese friends, who had introduced her to their wonderful culture.
"We love Chinese culture and we were happy to be witnesses to its fantastic representation. Music, costumes—we liked everything," commented Moe Fayyaz from Folsom, C.A., a former Intel employee, and his friend Jeff Tohidi from Sacramento, C.A.
"The performance is very impressive. I loved [the] costumes, dances. It is an excellent job," said "A happily retired" Joe Hassna from Elk Grove who used to work for Mother's Cookies.

These unique performances have drawn the attention and admiration of audiences around the world. The company recently began an aspiring world tour that will visit 60 cities on four continents. By the end of its tour, it will have played to a total live audience of 650,000 in over 60 cities.
Divine Performing Arts will play seven shows in San Francisco from Jan. 23 to Jan. 26, as part of its global tour. After that it will continue with an 11-day run at New York's famous Radio City Music Hall beginning on Jan. 30.
