At the Nokia Theatre in Grand Prairie on Sunday evening, many Texans experienced the magnificence of true traditional Chinese culture for the first time.
It was through the work of the Divine Performing Arts, consisting of world class professional dancers, singers, and musicians, that New Tang Dynasty TV's Chinese New Spectacular brought its magical beauty to the stage as part of its 60-city world tour.
The mission of the Spectacular is to revive China's authentic culture based on 5,000 years of history — a culture many believed during ancient times to have been passed down from the heavens.
Hosted in English and Chinese, with vivid, colorful costumes, powerful thundering drums contrasted with soothing music smooth enough to penetrate the soul, the Chinese New Spectacular is truly a crowd pleaser.
"I think that the show is very graceful, the colors and costumes are very vibrant, and the transition from one act to the other is seamless. I really liked the drums," said audience member Mike Arnold after the show.
"I think that it's really strong in history, in terms of looking at the Chinese culture, and how it really has evolved into world history."
The Spectacular received much recognition in the state of Texas, ranging from congratulatory letters and city proclamations to state resolutions passed in the House of Representatives.
On opening night, State Representatives Paula Pierson and Kirk England acknowledged the Spectacular by presenting one of the State Resolutions. Council member Richard Fregoe, on behalf of Charles England, Mayor of Grand Prairie, also presented a proclamation in acknowledgement of the event.
After the show, Representatives Pierson and England talked about their impression of the Spectacular. Ms. Pierson said it was a wonderful performance that celebrates the long history of Chinese culture.
"The whole performance is amazing, absolutely wonderful. The programs are bountiful and the color, music, songs, dances, and the background are all magnificent."
Ms. Pierson said that this is the first time she has seen such a unique performance showcasing Chinese culture while at the same time sending out a message of compassion.
"Compassion is the perfect word," said her husband, Grey Pierson,
Mr. Pierson said people can see the peaceful and compassionate spirits of Falun Gong practitioners from some of the programs in the Spectacular, adding that it was hard to understand why the Chinese government persecutes Falun Gong.
Mr. England said he gained a better understanding of traditional Chinese culture from the show.
"The way that the Chinese tell a story through dance and music is just inspiring. It is inspiring for them to be able to tell that story to America and Texas, such as the ability to overcome struggles and stand up for what is right in their hearts with their beliefs and to work together to get important things done.
"I heard Barrack Obama talk about hope and I see a lot of that tonight in the dance. To see a people who won't give up that hope and struggle for the right to succeed and win, this is the impression and message that I am left with tonight."
The Spectacular attracted people from many cultures and races. Jacob Camacho, of Mexican descent, said in Spanish that the show demonstrates China's advanced culture very well.
"I found it very interesting, colorful, and enjoyed the scenes with the ocean and drums. I found it very entertaining and outside of what is common. The message of the show was very interesting in that it generally speaks about love. As the world keeps changing, as long as the world has love, then that is when the change can occur."
Zhanghua Zhou, a former administrator in a hospital, said the Spectacular was wonderful and he was moved by the performances. He felt glad to see such a good show because after the Cultural Revolution, the true Chinese culture and China's tradition of morality has diminished. He said he saw tradition and hope in the Spectacular.
"The messages go side by side with Christianity and the things that they talk about, with many similar things. The singers moved me because I was reading along with what they were singing," added Arnold.
Also delighted with the Spectacular, Doctor's assistant Shirley Niematali said: "The show is beautiful, just terrific. The dances and costumes are gorgeous."
