Brenda Jones, Detroit City Councilwoman (2008)

Dear Friends:

On behalf of the Detroit City Council and all fellow Detroiters, I join the Chinese-American community in celebrating the 2008 Chinese New Year!

Margret Mead said: “if we are to achieve a richer culture, rich in contrasting values, we must recognize the whole gamut of human potentialities.” From Detroit’s founding in 1701 by Lafayette, its role in the Underground Railroad, and creating the largest Arab-American population outside the Middle East, our city has always been a leader of great American cities reaching out, including and nurturing people of all backgrounds to achieve their full potential.

The Chinese New Year Spectacular is shining example of classical Chinese culture, showcasing the cultural diversity for which our international city has been recognized. It is truly an honor and privilege for the City of Detroit and the Detroit Opera House to host this dynamic event.

Congratulations and best wishes ads the citizens of Detroit along with its Council Members join you in the celebration of the “Year of the Rat” with spirit of hope and prosperity.

Sincerely,

Brenda Jones, Councilwoman
