STOCKHOLM, Sweden—As it continues its run at Stockholm's Circus Theater, the Divine Performing Arts Chinese Spectacular has been getting rave reviews and standing ovations.
With many sold-out performances, the Spectacular will play an extra performance i
Celebrities are turning out to experience the dance, drumming and soul-stirring traditions from China's past, traditions that are now establishing a new era in China's history.
Simon Kaijser da Silva, a film director from Stockholm, attended Tuesday's show.
"It was very interesting. My only reference to Chinese culture has been Chinese films so you can recognize certain things from film – so very interesting. Like the use of fabric in dances and this sort of almost martial art-like acrobatic dance, sort of a mix between dance and acrobatics and martial arts," said da Silva.
He enjoyed several of the acts.
"I liked the Mongolian horse dance [Herding on the Mongolian Plains], especially some of the movement where they sort of imitated riding. Very, very nice — very simple means but very effective.
"I also liked Nymphs of the Sea when they used the blue fans. That was very nice. The fabric again was very effective."
Will the Divine Performing Arts unwittingly influence the Swedish director's next film? We have yet to find out.
I think it was fantastic and extraordinary!"
She continued, "The colors, the music, and the performance, as well as the history of traditional Chinese culture that they showed—all of these came together. When someone asked me which performance I liked the best, I couldn't say, because one comes after another, and it's better and better all the time!"
Regarding her occupation Ms. Lindlom said, "Well, sometimes I do exhibitions, [create] peaceful surroundings for people to help them find calm inside. It [the Spectacular ] is a very beautiful surrounding as well. Based on the four elements, air, earth, fire, and water."
She feels the show's message added to her life, "The show gave me [an impression of] Falun Gong: I think that is a very good message. The three words [Truthfulness, Compassion, Forbearance] mentioned are essential for human beings. I would like to give more to others as well, just as they did here. That is what I received from the performance overall."
"In what way will I pass [the message] on?" Ms. Lindlom mused, "Well, I will think of it even more when I am … [she stopped mid-sentence and then said] Well, I am trying to be a good person and give to others, this spiritual felling, the love and the holy side of myself, but I realize this even more from the show. As well as the art, the singing, the dancing, and everything else."
When asked if she knew of the attempt made by the Chinese Embassy to stop the show, she said, "I feel sorry for them. Sorry in my heart that they don't understand better. I think they should open their hearts and minds a little more."
Ms. Lindlom continued, "Well, it was an outstanding performance that you can't find anywhere else. I would like to take my father. I think of him all the time. He is 87 years old. I would like him here to see the show. I will probably buy him and his fiancé a ticket so they can come and see the show. I would like him to see it because he is very old, and I don't think he will have a chance to see it again."
She commented on how traditional Chinese Culture was presented, "It was done in many ways, because in between the performances the show hostess presented something about what we were going to see, and she explained about the traditional dancing, singing, and movements. So I think I received a very clear message about this."
Ms. Kristina Lanestrand,
"I think it was wonderful and very beautiful, like a fairy tale. I thought the clothes and costumes were great."
"I was very fascinated by the two-stringed [erhu]. So very beautiful! I play the violin, myself -- it has four strings and I know how difficult it is!"
She said that it was an entirely new experience for her.
"I think it is very graceful: The movements, they express so much. I think it's fascinating."
